Got Water Damage Due To Burst Bathroom Pipes? Steps To Take To Get Everything Dry Again
ShareIf the pipes in your bathroom burst and you have water damage, it is important that you get this taken care of quickly. This is because the longer the water sits, the worse the damage you will have. To prevent this from happening, below is some information on steps you should take to get everything dry again.
Disconnect, Stop, and Salvage
The first thing is to disconnect your power by turning off the breaker that powers your bathroom and any room that is near water. Your breaker panel may be in a garage, a basement, or a closet inside your home.
Next, you need to stop the water that is running in your bathroom by shutting off the main water valve. The valve may be buried in the ground outside or it may be near the main water line. If you are not sure, a plumber can tell you where this is located.
Once the power and water are turned off, now it is time to salvage anything that does not have water damage. Even things that only have little water damage may be salvaged.
Call Insurance Company
Call the insurance company and they will send someone out to your home to assess the damage and give you an estimate on what it will take to repair everything. If the flood was substantial, the water likely leaked outside of the bathroom, such as to a hallway or closet. The water can leak through the carpeting into the carpet pad and then into the flooring below.
It may be a good idea for you to also hire someone to assess the damage for you and give you an estimate. You can then compare the estimates to see if they are the same or if there is a big difference.
Call Water Restoration
Your insurance company may call a water damage company, or you may need to do this on your own. The water damage company will bring large fans to put into areas that have water damage to start the drying process.
The water damage company will remove all carpeting immediately, as well as anything else that has a lot of water damage. Humidifiers will be set up to prevent mold and mildew from growing. The large fans will be kept at your home overnight in most cases and left running. Once everything is removed and dried out you can then start the process of getting everything back to normal, such as installing flooring, carpeting, and more.
The water damage company that you hire can give you much more information.
